What this check covers
A certificate is only as good as the record behind it. Verification closes the gap between a PDF someone emailed you and the certificate the issuer actually created.
The record exists
The certificate was generated by the issuer and stored, rather than assembled in a word processor after the fact.
Nothing was edited
Product, laboratory, report number, and test date are read from the issuing record, so an altered PDF will not match what you see here.
The test is still current
Children’s product testing goes stale. The check flags a certificate whose test date is approaching or past its retest window.
Questions people ask
What does verifying a certificate actually prove?
It proves the certificate exists as issued and has not been edited since: the product, laboratory, report number, and test date shown here come straight from the issuing record. It is not a CPSC endorsement, and it does not re-check the laboratory testing behind the certificate.
The link says no certificate matches. What now?
Either the code was mistyped, or the issuer switched verification off for that certificate. Ask the seller for a current copy of the certificate and the underlying test report from a CPSC-accepted laboratory.
Can I verify a certificate that was not issued here?
No. This page checks certificates generated with CPC ShadowOps, which carry a QR code and a verification link. For certificates issued elsewhere, ask the issuer for the test report from the CPSC-accepted laboratory named on the certificate.
Does a current certificate mean the product is safe to list?
It means the paperwork is in order and the test date has not gone stale. Marketplaces may still ask for the full test report, and the certifying party remains responsible for confirming that the rules cited are the right ones for the product.
