XRF vs laboratory lead testing
What each method is for
- XRF: rapid screening of incoming materials, production samples, and competitor products; surface-sensitive and thickness-dependent on curved or layered parts.
- Accepted-lab testing: the certified, method-based result — substrate digestion for lead content, coating analysis for paint — that supports a CPC.
- Both together: XRF before production catches problems while they are cheap; lab testing certifies the result.
Where XRF misleads
XRF reads only the near surface, struggles on curved or small components, and cannot replace the wet-chemistry or ICP methods the CPSC rules prescribe. A passing XRF screen on a painted surface says nothing definitive about the substrate under it — sellers who certify from XRF alone fail marketplace reviews and, worse, ship non-compliant goods confidently.
Questions people ask
Can I use XRF results on my CPC?
No: the certification testing must come from a CPSC-accepted laboratory. Use XRF to screen and to verify production, and the lab to certify.
Is XRF accurate enough to trust for screening?
For flat, accessible surfaces on known materials, reasonably — with calibration standards. For coatings, curves, and mixed assemblies, treat XRF as a flag, not a verdict.
