How to prepare samples for lab testing

Send production-representative samples: items made on the actual production line with the actual materials, not hand-finished prototypes. Include every variant (each color, fabric, or decoration is a distinct material), pack them so nothing arrives damaged, and attach a material list and the rule list you believe apply. Good sample preparation prevents the two most common delays: re-submission and scope confusion.

The pre-submission checklist

  • Samples from the production process, in final finishes and decorations.
  • Every distinct material represented (each paint color, each fabric, each plastic).
  • Quantities per the lab’s requirements (ask before shipping: destructive tests consume samples).
  • A material list and the claimed age grade.
  • Your contact details and the exact product name you want on the report.

What happens to your samples

Labs typically consume or alter samples during testing (drops, pulls, chemical extraction) and may keep records of them. Assume the samples are gone: never ship your only or best items, and photograph what you send.

How many samples does a lab need?

It varies by test scope: simple chemical testing needs fewer samples than mechanical abuse testing. Ask the lab for sample counts per rule when you request the quote.

Can I send photos instead of samples for some materials?
