CPC for children’s bunk beds
Which rules apply to children’s bunk beds
- Bunk beds marketed to children combine the federal entrapment geometry requirements with children’s-product lead and coating testing and tracking labels.
- CPSIA section 101 total lead content in accessible substrate materials.
- 16 CFR part 1303 lead in paint and surface coatings where painted or coated.
- CPSIA section 103 tracking labels: manufacturer, location, and date of manufacture on product and packaging.
The testing and certification path
Testing covers the entrapment measurements for every opening, guardrail and ladder integrity, plus lead substrate and coating tests on accessible surfaces. Adult-model bunk beds keep the entrapment requirements but skip the children’s rules — marketing decides the classification.
Book testing at a laboratory that is CPSC-accepted for each rule, issue the CPC in your own name citing the rules your report supports, and keep the certificate with its test report for at least five years. Marketplaces ask for the pair, not the certificate alone.
Questions people ask
Is there a separate bunk bed rule for children’s models?
The entrapment requirements apply to bunk beds generally; children’s-marketed models add the CPSIA children’s rules on their CPC. One design can produce both adult and children’s certificates only if marketing genuinely differs.
Do loft beds need the same testing?
Elevated lofts are evaluated with the same entrapment geometry where children sleep above floor level. Classify with your laboratory.
