What goes on a children’s clothing CPC
- 16 CFR Part 1610 for general wearing apparel flammability (testing may be exempt for plain-surface fabrics above minimum weights).
- CPSIA Section 101 and 16 CFR Part 1303 for lead in substrate, prints, and surface coatings.
- CPSIA Section 103 tracking labels, marked permanently on the garment or its packaging.
Sleepwear: check before you list
Children’s sleepwear (roughly sizes 9 months to 14) must meet 16 CFR Parts 1615/1616, which are far stricter than general apparel flammability and may require flame-resistant fabric or specific snug-fit designs. Marketing a garment as sleepwear when it is not certified for it is a common and expensive mistake.
Questions people ask
Do printed t-shirts need phthalates testing?
The phthalates ban targets toys and child care articles, so general children’s clothing usually does not cite it unless plasticized prints or components bring it into scope. Confirm with your lab.
Are embellishments tested separately?
Rhinestones, plastisol prints, andappliqués contain the materials regulators care about (lead, phthalates). Labs typically test each decoration type: budget for it.
How many certificates do I need for a size run?
Certificates can cover identical garments across sizes in many cases, but fabric lots and decoration changes can break coverage. Ask your lab to define the group.
